St. Sebastian Icon Print

Estella wrote this icon at eleven years old, working in the centuries-old Byzantine tradition with a seriousness and skill that belies her age.
St. Sebastian — soldier, martyr, and patron saint of athletes and those who suffer — is rendered here in the serene style of Eastern iconography. His gaze is cast downward and to the right, toward the arrow held in his left hand — the instrument of his martyrdom, regarded not with anguish but with a kind of quiet acceptance. His right hand clutches a cross, anchoring him to the faith that sustained him. It is a composition full of stillness and interior strength, the two objects in his hands telling the whole story of his life without a word. A powerful and deeply felt piece by a remarkable young artist.
